Butt Plugs for Beginners: How to Start Safely (No Scares)

Anal play is one of those things people talk about too little and misinform about far too much. So let’s take the mystery out of it: practised with your head, it’s safe and hugely pleasurable; practised recklessly, it can give you a silly scare. In this guide we tell you the only things that really matter for your first time with a plug.

1. The Rule That Is NOT Negotiable: a Flared Base

Here comes the most important part of the whole article: unlike the vagina, the rectum has no end and tends to “suck” things inwards. That’s why an anal toy must always have a wide base (a stopper) that keeps it from sliding inside. No improvised objects, bottles or smooth toys without a base: that’s the number one way to end up in the emergency room telling an awkward story.

2. Start Small (Really)

The classic mistake is wanting to start with the size you saw in a video. The sphincter is a muscle and needs training little by little. 3. Lube: Plenty of It, and Water-Based

The rectum, unlike the vagina, does not lubricate itself. So lube isn’t optional: it’s mandatory and generous (reapply as many times as needed). 4. Relax: Rushing Is Your Enemy

Take a shower first if it puts you at ease, find a comfortable position, breathe and go millimetre by millimetre. Warm up beforehand with a massage or a finger. Anal pleasure is about patience, not force: if there’s sharp pain, stop. Mild discomfort that fades is fine; stabbing pain is a stop signal.

5. Body-Safe Material: It Matters Even More Here

6. Hygiene, Before and After

Wash the toy with water and mild soap before and after every use, and sterilise it now and then by boiling it (platinum silicone can take it with ease). And never go from anus to vagina with the same toy without washing it in between.
